Quick Test of Pre-Alpha 0.1 Completed

EDIT: my HUGE thanks to the dozen people who were able to hop in (with no notice) and help test the very early pre-alpha! I’ve taken the server down now to work on the many, many glitches that I noticed as people played. :) ┬áBut please do mention any issues you noticed… I’m sure I don’t know about them all yet.

The good news is the server was very stable the whole time, and we peaked with 11 concurrent users, and no noticeable server lag (though some client lag from the rendering in town). That’s great, it means I already hit one of my stability goals for pre-alpha! Now I can work on polishing it up, and then making sure it can run unattended for a few days straight. The next, hopefully-somewhat-longer test will come this week.

Thanks again everybody, and if you have comments from the quick test, please post here!

Is this Windows only? I installed the Unity Player while using Firefox on Mac OS X but it keeps sending me to the installer. Will try on Windows as well shortly but wanted to check.

  2. Jeremiah says:

Nice! I’ll give it a try.

  3. Eric says:

@Mitch – it’s supposed to be Windows/Mac. I just used the auto-generated template page, too, so I’m not sure what’s up. I don’t have a Mac to test with unfortunately.

  4. Mitch says:

    No worries. Thanks!

I was very happy to see a configurable keybindings menu, because there are a great many free MMOs that have been out for years that don’t even do that much. One of my biggest reasons for not playing an MMO past the first five minutes is that they have their keybindings on things that don’t make sense to how my brain has been trained to work, like opening my bag with I instead of B, or making A and D turn instead of strafe, and they won’t let me change them! So thanks for that.

I just found a pond with some fish right before you took the server down, and after blurrily catching clownfish for a bit, I leveled up and discovered that the perch didn’t despawn when I caught it. Perhaps you saw me spam-leveling my fishing up to 12 in a matter of minutes….

I’ve been a quiet follower of this project for a while, glad to hear that it’s working out nicely. I understand the alpha tests are invite-only?

  7. Alex says:

Oh noes! I seem not to have gotten the memo! Who do I need to bribe to hop in on the next test? I’m in Europe though so time zones might be a bit of a problem … =D

  8. mavis says:

    curses – missed it!

  9. Aaron (EscapeCharacter) says:

There were a couple oddities with mouse-look. Sometimes it would turn left or right way too quickly – I think when there were a lot of objects on the screen. You already know about the issue with looking up or down.

There was also a large lag spike at one point, which lasted maybe 5-10 seconds before all commands suddenly went through and chat caught up.

    Thanks for letting me test!

  10. Sandra says:

Kiryn: One of the side-effects of Eric being left-handed, I think. (The keybinding menu, not the fish.)

omeg: Not so much by invite as by whoever happens to be around. :) Eric put up a blog post last night saying the server was up for a bit for some quick testing. We expected it would take awhile for people to see it and wander in, but more people were available and willing to suffer through it than we expected.

Alex: The next test should run a bit longer so hopefully you’ll have a chance to suffer with us. :)

Aaron: That lag spike was me crashing the mushroom guy. Sorry about that!

  11. Eric says:

Kiryn: thanks for the bug heads up! I just fixed it and found that it was supposed to give out item #5031 (“Raw Perch”) 1 time. Instead, it gave item #1 (“The First Hard-Coded Item”) 5031 times. Got those two numbers swapped!

  12. Aaron says:

    Poor mushroom guy. RIP.

  13. Eric says:

Sorry to people who missed it… it was really short, and with no notice. I’ll have a longer one soon! Fixing bugs right now…

  14. Anjin says:

I just recovered from one of my worst flu weekends ever only to discover that I missed this too. Shucks. :)

I must say though that I love reading these bug reports. Sure it’s inside baseball, but it is fascinating to me.

  15. Expert Novice says:

Man i never get to play with the cool toys. :(
please for the love of god – i’ve been following this from day 1, checking up on it weekly – please invite me next time! :’(

  16. Kiryn says:

“There were a couple oddities with mouse-look. Sometimes it would turn left or right way too quickly”

I agree with that completely. I kept trying to move my camera around and had to move my mouse VERY slowly in order to aim in the direction I wanted. Far too sensitive. I thought maybe it would be better if I played in full screen rather than the tiny little window, but I didn’t have a chance to try before the server went down. Oh well.

I’ll be happy to poke at the server again for more bugs next time it’s up. (I test MMOs for a living, so I’m used to poking at unfinished content.) Been following these posts for a while, and I’m really loving how it’s turning out so far. I’ve always been fan of skill-leveling systems, and I’m often disappointed when I find that the vast majority of those skills are combat-based. Looking forward to seeing what crazy non-combat skills you add in the future!

  17. kleer says:

I hope I’m around for the next testing session. :]

  18. Sofie says:

Full screen had the mouse issues too. It also stopped youtube playlists from playing.

Looking forward to playing the game again :)
